Tacketts Mill Farm is the home of the Smith family. We re-located to the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, right after 9/11. In late 2007 we moved from inside the beltway to our lovely, historic home in Stafford, which we commonly refer to as "Free America". Our little place hosts our family, our horses, chickens, turkeys, ducks, quail, rabbits, cats, dogs and a huge amount of native Virginia wildlife and plant-life. We were motivated to move to a more rural area by our desire to escape the "occupied" feeling of the immediate Washington DC environs. We wanted to have the space to move around and do the things we wanted to do, plant a garden, let our pets run outside without a leash, and shoot a gun on our own property without anyone getting excited and calling the police. We longed for a small farm and a few farm animals. We wanted to be more self-sufficient and less reliant on the power company and the grocery store to provide our basic needs. We believe in living off the land as much as possible, not polluting or harming the land we rely on, husbanding the natural resources at our disposal and in the humane raising of livestock animals for our own use. We are opposed to cruelty in keeping and slaughtering animals. We believe in energy independence, both for our country and for our farm. We are not opposed to fossil fuels, in fact we are big believers in the efficiency of diesel fuel, but we do believe in ending the American dependence on foreign sources of energy. We have well water and are not dependent on "city" water. We burn our own wood in our wood stove and try not to run the AC during the summer and the house gets a good cross breeze that keeps us pretty cool. As we continue to improve our place we hope to add alternative energy sources like solar and micro-hydro electricity.
Tacketts Mill Farm is a privately owned and operated family farm. We are patriotic Americans. We support our Soldiers, Marines, Airmen and Sailors serving our country in harms way and their families.
We want to share the wonders of "Free America" with you and hope that you will share your experiences with us as well.
